I’ve been playing through a game that I felt obliged to share. It’s described as a “first person survival game”. Now, I know what you’re all thinking – it has to contain zombies or dinosaurs or be set during a World War. No, none of those things.
The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness. There are no zombies – only you, the cold, and everything Mother Nature can throw at you.
Sometimes you don’t want fast-paced. Sometimes you get home from work and just want to have a slump, in your comfy clothes, with a cuppa tea and sit down and relax. This game lets you do just that.
So two things about the game before we go any further:
1. It’s slow paced
2. It’s fucking hard
By slow paced, I mean – you spend most of the time walking around in the frozen wilderness. You can run, but running costs calories and you want to survive. Also you want to save your stamina in case you get attacked.
Attacked? I thought you said no zombies.
There are no zombies, no dinosaurs, not your A-Typical survival game. But there are wolves.
There are also bears.
If that’s not scary enough, there are countless other ways you can die too. Hypothermia being #1. Thirst. Starvation. Food poisoning. Falling off unexpected cliffs while exploring a forest.
As well as all of the above, you have to balance sleeping, eating, cooking, hunting, scavenging, exploring, stamina, drinking (which also involves making sure you don’t drink putrid water – all water has to be boiled or purified), extreme weather effects… with your biggest enemy…..
It isn’t called The Long Dark for no reason. 12 hours a day (ingame time), it’s almost impossible to do anything other than sleep or rest until you find a source of light. I’ve found a few gas lanterns lying around, but not enough fuel to keep them going for any longer than a couple of hours.
I’ve established a base camp for myself in a little house beside a frozen lake. Easily distinguishable by the Canadian flag.
There’s quite a few buildings scattered all over the map and you can choose to live anywhere you please. There’s no competition for housing. There’s no other human life around. Everyone I’ve met is literally a frozen corpse. It’s just me. Alone. In the dark.
Here’s a preview of the base I’ve chosen from the inside.
One of the things I love most about this game is the artwork. It’s beautiful. Stunning. Wandering around in the frozen wilderness probably isn’t to everyone’s taste. But you can still appreciate how picturesque the scenery is.
The Long Dark is on sale, at the moment, on Steam. Pick it upwhile it’s cheap!
